The opportunity inside a question

A recurring friction in ordinary life can be a reason to look more closely.

01 / THE QUESTION

Who else is struggling with the thing that keeps troubling you?

Founder’s words · translated from Chinese

Sometimes the problem in front of you is an opportunity. One you have dreamed of.

And real opportunities are hidden in these countless present moments.

A reflection

We often invent a solution and then search for someone who needs it. Another path begins by staying with a familiar situation and observing how people manage to get things done.

A handwritten sheet, a repeated confirmation or a wait everyone tolerates may hold a need that has not been properly understood.

02 / A CLOSER LOOK

Observe what people already do

Begin with a particular person doing a particular task. Ask about the most recent occasion: how it began, where it became difficult and what they eventually did.

An improvised alternative may be affordable, familiar and dependable. Understanding why it persists reveals the threshold a new idea must cross.

A need also requires someone able to sustain the response

A problem can deserve attention without becoming a business. Some needs are served by communities, some by public institutions and some by an ongoing exchange.

Business exploration asks who needs the improvement, who will contribute and who can provide it over time. The payer and user may differ; someone carrying a cost may be absent from the initial discussion.

Give the idea a small encounter with reality

Deliver a service manually once, or let a few people try a version that can be withdrawn. The purpose is to discover what happens when the idea meets everyday life.

Do people use it again? Where do they return to the old approach? What time and resources would continued provision require? These answers determine whether a larger commitment is warranted.

03 / BUSINESS AND OPPORTUNITY

Let the idea
meet a real decision.

These are directions to explore and conditions to test, not completed projects or assured returns.

01 / A POSSIBLE DIRECTION

Move from an interview to a testable opportunity

A venture has a concept but an unclear use case.

An opportunity to explore
Separate the concept into assumptions, understand recent experiences and design a limited trial.
What to test first
Name observations that could support or overturn the idea: repeat use, willingness to contribute and cost of provision. Decide whether to continue, change or stop.

02 / A POSSIBLE DIRECTION

Find the obstacle before introducing the technology

A team wants AI but does not know whether the difficulty lies in tools, process or responsibility.

An opportunity to explore
Trace waiting, handovers and checking in one recurring task, then select a bounded improvement.
What to test first
Compare with the existing approach and examine the cost of the entire workflow. Preserve a way back to the prior process.

04 / OLDER WISDOM

Another time.
A familiar question.

Dao De Jing: form and the space that makes it useful

Laozi · Wang Bi recension · Chapter 11

有之以為利,無之以為用。

IN ITS ORIGINAL CONTEXT

The chapter uses a wheel hub, a vessel and a room to consider how solid form and empty space contribute to use.

MAINNET’S CONTEMPORARY REFLECTION

Our product question is what people actually make use of. Space, waiting and autonomy may deserve as much attention as a visible feature. This is a contemporary extension.
